Each month, Valley Equipment recognizes a member of its staff for their continued excellence and dedication.
This month, our Staff Spotlight is on Mrs. Bertha Asher.
The Friendly Voice
Bertha Asher has been a part of Valley Equipment since January 2001. She works
with payables and receivables in the accounting office as well as functions as
our ambassador – the friendly voice that greets callers. Bertha shares that she
loves her job “and it can sometimes be a real challenge”.
Before coming to Valley, Bertha worked in the textile industry for 24 years. When the plant closed in 1997, that allowed her the opportunity to hone her business skills by earning a secretarial certificate from Northeast State Community College.
Who is Bertha?
Bertha was born in Elizabethton, TN and has lived there most of her life. She is
married to Mike Asher (electrical shop leader at Valley Equipment) and has a
son, one step-son, one grandson and two god-daughters. Some of her favorite past
times include being outside, bird watching, riding motor cycles with Mike and
singing. One other interesting fact is that Bertha is one of 15 children.
The Family Connection
Something that happens on a regular basis at Valley Equipment is that we have
multiple members of a family working here. We have fathers and sons, fathers and
daughters, and uncles and nephews. It is a source of pride on the part of the
owners that employees are happy enough with their jobs that they recommend their
family members for employment.
At the end of 2000, Bertha was looking for a job and Mike suggested that she
would make a nice addition to the team. Bertha has been at Valley ever since. The running joke around the office is that we wish Bertha could be cloned to have more kind, generous and hard workers around.

So the next time you hear that voice on the phone, “This is Bertha…”,
you will know a little about the lady behind the voice!
